What are Ohio's rules for barbers and stylists?
To cut, color, style or provide related services in Ohio, you need a license from the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board, and salons and barbershops need an establishment license. A license is separate from insurance. Ohio doesn't require individual barbers or cosmetologists to carry liability insurance, but many salon owners and booth-rental agreements do.

Frequently asked questions
Do Ohio barbers and cosmetologists need liability insurance?
Ohio doesn't require an individual barber or cosmetologist to carry liability insurance to hold a license. Chapters 4709 and 4713 of the Ohio Revised Code set license, sanitation and continuing education rules, not insurance rules. In Amanda Hill’s experience, many salon and shop owners require booth renters and independent contractors to carry their own policy, and one client claim can cost far more than a year of coverage.
How much does it cost?
Option 1, the solo policy, is $193 a year, paid once, with no added fees. Option 2, for barbers and stylists working from their own home, starts from $233 a year. You see your exact price at the online checkout.
What does Option 1 cost with add-ons?
Typical Ohio Option 1 rates. Your exact price can change with your answers to the underwriting questions at checkout. Base policy $193; with data security $273; with equipment coverage and data security $323 ($5K), $383 ($10K), $563 ($25K) or $863 ($50K). See the table.
Which option should I pick?
Option 1 if you work in someone else's salon or shop, or rent a chair, with no employees. Option 2 if you work from your own home, with up to 3 employees. If you own the shop, have more than 3 employees or need bigger limits, request a quote and an agent will reach out.
Does it cover me if I rent a booth?
Yes. Option 1 is built for independent contractors and booth renters. The salon owner's policy generally protects the salon, not a renter, so you need a policy in your own name. Every salon or shop you contract with is added as an additional insured at no cost.
How do I get proof of insurance for my salon owner?
Download your certificate right after you buy. Your email becomes your login at usli.com/policyholder-services for documents, certificates and claims. Free paper copies: 1-855-ASK-USLI (1-855-275-8754).
How do I pay, and are there fees?
Pay in full at checkout by credit or debit card or ACH. No policy fees or taxes are added at checkout in Ohio, so Option 1 is $193.00 exactly unless you add optional coverage. There is no monthly plan; the Autopay box at checkout is for renewals. If you cancel early, USLI keeps at least 25% of the premium (minimum earned premium).
What if I do tanning, microblading or other services?
Those aren't covered by the online options, but we can still help. Send us your details and an agent will reach out with quotes from our other insurance companies.
